Trauma-Informed Schools
Trauma can affect a student’s social, emotional, and cognitive development in ways that result in difficulties adjusting to the social and academic requirements of school.
The Tenets of Trauma-Informed Schools:
Understanding Trauma
When educators understand the effects of trauma, they are able to view behaviours from an empathic lens.
Social-Emotional Learning
As students learn how to regulate their emotions and interact effectively with others, they are better able to engage in learning.
Cultural Humility
Students have a variety of beliefs and values. It is important for educators to be aware of and respect students' worldviews, realizing we can never truly understand another's culture.
Safety and Predictability
A sense of physical and psychological safety helps to prevent a stress response, enabling students to concentrate and engage in learning.
Empowerment and Collaboration
Students need to have feelings of competence and validation that their voices are being heard.
